Betsey Johnson has signed a four-year licensing agreement with the Los Angeles-based Innovo Group Inc. to design market and distribute a line of women’s jeans and denim-related apparel.
Launching for fall retailing, the line will consist of jeans, T-shirts and other tops under the Betsey Johnson label. The agreement allows for an initial four-year term with renewal options. The line will be targeted to better department and specialty stores in the U.S. and Canada, as well as to the Betsey Johnson retail boutiques nationwide. “We believe Betsey Johnson complements our existing portfolio of brands, such as Joe’s Jeans and Fetish, very well,” New York designer Betsey Johnson has built her longstanding fashion career by following her own set of rules. She’s known for celebrating exuberant, the embellished and the over-the-top looks. BETSEY Johnson’s boutique is credited with helping revive Melrose in the 1980s, and the designer continues to sell her dresses and tops throughout the world. But her premium jeans have turned out to be a dud for Innovo Group Inc. The City of Commerce-based clothing manufacturer inked a four-year deal in 2004 with Betsey Johnson licensor B.J. Vines Inc. to manufacture a Johnson line of jeans and related tops for high-end department and specialty stores. According to the licensing agreement, Innovo expected sales of Johnson’s apparel to total between $2.5 million and $5.5 million, which would have earned Johnson royalties of at least about $1.3 million. Her love of the theater and the costumes worn there were her first inspirations to design clothing. In 1965, Johnson landed a job as top designer for Paraphernalia, a clothing boutique in New York. She created clothes that reflected the era, from hippies to sexy, and that became her trademark. Her first store, Betsey Bunky Nini, offered her own label, Alley Cat, which set the trend.

What items from New York City would be good to include in a gift basket to an ex-NYCer that is homesick?
I am visiting a friend in Germany who was born and raised in NYC and is getting homesick. I would love to bring some items over that would remind her of the city. They should be small and not cost prohibitive (no Tiffany jewelry!). I am not from NYC originally, so the only thing I came up with so far is a copy of the Sunday Times—she lived in Manhattan so items from there would be preferred. Thanks!
When I visit my brother in California, he always wants me to bring bagels, a pretzel (from a street vendor), a bottle of Fox’s U-Bet chocolate syrup, sour pickles, (Germany has better pickles) halvah, ring jells,Junior’s Cheesecake and real New York corned beef (it’s easy to pack the perishables – I use that blue picnic ice). You can give your friend a Yankees or Mets cap or tee shirt, a coffee table book of New York, a tourist book with descriptions of the Empire State, Statue of Liberty, Times Square, or a novel that takes place in New York, a poster of a favorite area, some “tourist” postcards.
A few years ago, I was fishing in Alaska – the bush pilot told us he originally lived in Connecticut and worked in New York before he got fed up with all the noise. He said he’d give anything for New York pizza. I found a humerous greeting card with “pizza seeds”; he got such a kick out of that.

If you have time, go to Chinatown and pick up a lot of New York “stocking stuffer” New York specialties – they’re very cheap – a miniature Empire State Building, a snowball with a New York view inside, a pin that says “I love New York”.
