Who knew that a pilgrimage to New York would only lead to frustration, near starvation and disillusion? Not the art student, not the idealistic, dreaming youth, that yearned for creative release and recognition.
Such could begin the story of any young art student in any city, on any campus, that dreams the dream, of moving to New York City. The mind of the city is on fire and lit by over eight million burning candles, that never entirely extinguish. The landscapes are older than the wood lining the banks that spread in from the coastline across the Hudson River.
The big Apple offers over forty museums and hundreds of galleries to consume the precious moments of an artists short life. Granted, the galleries are sometimes only cupboards, seemingly abandoned by the surrounding facades, and armies of pedestrians, neatly tucked away in a brownstone crack.
The calmest hour is just before sunrise, when the predawn glow meets the lights of the city. Already across Manhattan, cafes and jewelry hawkers wrestle for the landscape’s only islands of sanctuary. Excitement exists for this, not on the river pier, watching the barges and Jersey shoreline.
Who paints the landscape of a cities soul? Who defines it and transforms the body of energy, romance, and urgency? The artist’s canvas is universal. It is carried within, always lurking about, waiting to be released and hurled out into the surrounding fray.
Indeed, the student of art, a fledgling artist, can gulp the blood of the city and never feel refreshed or renewed. As fast as the excitement rushes through the veins, a new wave washes through the artist’s dreams.
The very nature of New York City is beyond poetic definition. Young foreign artists have drowned in the pool of unceasing sensation and entertainment. Every fiber inundated by the sensorial flood.
New Your City is a stoic teacher, impassive and impartial, its boundaries and limits adorn its colorful attire. For an artist to communicate with the city, a new depth of intuitive awareness is necessary to grow and be nurtured. The city takes no prisoners. It spits them out or swallows them whole. Only the adaptable and truly creative survive and prosper.
Unless you are savvy, adaptable, resilient, stalwart, and possess the tenacity of a tree, do not attempt to conquer the city with your dreams. Fill yourself with comfortable associations so that the assault on your being will not drown you, and distract from the wonder that is New York.
Begin your day with a hearty slice of Sicilian Pizza, and a cup of Turkish coffee. Dress for the adventure; tennis shoes, walking shoes, or running shoes, a t-shirt, or warm jacket, casual wear, or denim pants, the least the better. Blend in, you are going on a walking tour and be prepared to exercise those limbs, there is nothing like a day long hike in the wilderness of New York City.
Walk the avenues in Manhattan; follow them south where they lead to The Village, Soho, and Little Italy. Stop at Washington Square Plaza, and absorb the tranquil chaos; venture through the world famous Arts Students League and observe the life drawing classes.
Visit Chinatown; take the subway to Queens, and Brooklyn, and all five boroughs, if you have the time; all the while seeking out the little cupboards of galleries nestled along the way. Take the Ferry to Long Island and when you return try to visit at least a few of the Museums.
You will soon discover that you can not accomplish it all in a day. It could take a year. Just make a note of where you stopped and begin there the next day. Stay focused and attentive. Listen, watch, and feel the enormous, wondrous, being that is NYC, and Enjoy.
