Gold

Before rubbing leave the items in the soap water for twenty minutes. If you want to clean chains, put them into a bottle with soap water, close the bottle and shake it for several minutes, leave it for half an hour and than shake again. Then take out your chain and wipe it with a woolen napkin.
Silver
In order to make your silver jewelry shiny again, rub it with a piece of cloth and then dip it for two hours in the water with sliced potato. In order to eliminate dark stains, rub the jewelry with a cloth wet with ethanol. After all the procedures, rinse the jewelry in pure cold water.
Pearls
Because of their shape pearls are not too exposed to dirt and fading. However the string they are beaded on is getting dirty very fast. This is why you should replace the string of your pearl necklaces once in two or three years. It’s better do ask a professional to do this, because it’s extremely hard to make the knots in a correct way and attach the snaps if there are any.
Hard gemstones
Hard gemstones like rubies, diamonds, and sapphires should be cleaned very carefully in order to prevent the damaging of the rim. Use a new toothbrush, warm water and dish detergent. Don’t clean them over the sink, or they might fall into the pipe and you will hardly find them after that. Wash them in a deep plate.
Note that the detergents you’ll use mustn’t contain bleach and abrasive materials (sand, artificial Diamond powder, etc.).
Opal and emerald stones require special treatment, they are very fragile and usually covered wit h a web of micro flaws. Never clean them with water or detergents. These stones should be taken to the professional jewelers.
