Teaching Children Sustainability And Environmental Care

Sustainability is a real issue these days, we now understand our obligation to the generations to come. Our children AND their children AND their children’s children deserve the same beautiful planet we have to enjoy. So how do we teach them environmental stewardship?

Enjoy Crafts Projects Together to Teach The Value of Recycled Items

One simple way to teach children about environmental care is by undertaking craft projects together. Kids learn much better through involvement, especially with Mom or Dad.

Teach them separation of recyclables by allowing them to label your recycling buckets or bins with their own creative signs for plastics, paper or organics for the compost bin.

Once you’ve assembing a good range of materials you can begin recycling paper into paper mache objects, greeting cards, paper flowers or jewellery or anything else that comes to mind. Things like thrown-out coffee cans can be decorated with recycled paper to create “customized” pencil holders that your kids will surely love. While there are hundreds of possibilities the best idea is to allow your kids to come up with their own ideas for maximum involvement and to stimulate their creativity.

Further show your kids just how garbage can become treasure by bringing them to a thrift store or recycling center. That way they can see how donations like old toys, clothing and shoes can be made into something usable for others.

Compost to Teach Environmental Awareness

Making compost can be a fun way to teach children about the “unseen” world of micro-organisms and the contribution they make to a healthy planet. Creating a heightened awareness of the invisible world of microscopic organisms helps kids see that our actions have real consequences in the natural world that we can’t at first see.

Get your kids to assist with routine emptying of the kitchen compost crock into the outside composter and they’ll be able to observe the shrinking and changes that take place as the microbes do their work. Even better, if you use a worm farm composter, children can observe the worms and begin to understand the role of worms and other small creatures in maintaining healthy soil. No matter what composting system you use, as soon as you have achieved a supply of finished material, spread it around your plants so children can observe the results of their labor.

Online Games and Websites For Kids

Discovering ways to live more sustainably and become stewards of this wonderful planet doesn’t have to be dull…. Children all enjoy interractive games with their colors and sounds and rapidly learn whilst playing.  Online, you’ll find dozens of interractive game sites and resources to teach sustainability and environmental awareness for any age group. Here are just a few popular game and resource sites that are a real hit with children:

OlliesWorld.com – Australian sustainability website for kids and teachers.
Ecokids.ca – A Canadian award winning site with games for children and resources for teachers.
Eekoworld see: pbskids.org/eekoworld/ – A great website that really grabs kid’s attention.
Ecokids.co.nz – A great Kiwi site for kids
Webrangers.us – an online version of the National Park Service Junior Ranger Program
Earthmatters4kids.org – excellent environmental education site with high quality teacher’s resources.

Clearly there are dozens of creative ways to teach kids how to appreciate the natural environment and live more sustainably.. But don’t forget, that as a parent our actions speak much louder than words: we must lead by example.
