Santa Fe Facts

Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico and is the fourth largest city in the state. It is a destination of world-renowned travel is rich in history, art and culture. The city is nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and is known for its hot summers and mild winters.

Santa Fe has a long history and is the site of the oldest public building in America, the Palace of the Governors. It also has the oldest celebration community in the nation called the Feast of Santa Fe This celebration was initiated in 1712 to commemorate the Spanish reconquest of New Mexico.

This city is rich in Hispanic and Native culture. Cultural diversity makes this a place where you can enjoy the scenic beauty and rich arts, music and sound food. Since this is a major tourist destination, it is easy to get here. There are flights in and out of Santa Fe every day and is in the southwest of the main Amtrak route. Reachable by car and there are a variety of hotels available accommodations.

The downtown is small but vibrant and is easily walkable. You have a central plaza is a gathering place for all types of people and entertainment. There are plenty of interesting museums in the area. The Palace of the Governors is a fascinating museum is housed in a historic 17th century building. This site is a National Historic Landmark Register and the interior is a massive museum collection covers the history Santa Fe and the Southwest.

Outside the museum are Native American arts and crafts. You can browse through jewelry, pottery and kachinas extending over blankets for visitors to admire and buy.

The Institute of American Indian Arts Museum is located in the center of the city from the Cathedral of San Francisco. This is one of the only museums in the contemporary world which emphasizes Native American arts. In May of each year you can see the works of students graduating from high school. They put on display for all to enjoy.

The Museum of Fine Arts is housed in a Renaissance style building and has been town Open since 1917. This is home to many permanent and changing exhibitions. There are more than 20,000 works of art on display. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is where you can see contemporary art and the modernism of world famous artist Georgia O'Keeffe and other famous artists. The works exhibited here are changed twice year so there is always something new and exciting to watch.

The Mountain Trails Gallery is a gallery unique in that it represents only a small number of elite artists. Each individual piece of art is shown so that the work of each artist are highlighted. You can admire and acquire works of art from major artists, including Vic Payne, Marilyn Bendell and Larry Riley.

If you are an arts lover or a collector, Santa Fe is the place to visit to view all types of arts and crafts. You will be able to find something here that everyone will enjoy visiting and learning about the culture of the Southwest.
