Riches To Be Found In The Attic
I had promised mom I would help her clean the attic and today was that day. Having looked up there, I could see why mom asked for help. While she would be physically able to deal with the boxes and items up there, the sheer amount of it would be overwhelming for anyone. Having given my word and I would be nice about it, but I was thinking that getting a shovel and plowing it out the window would deal with all of it.
Only time would tell me if I would regret going up there to help. I grew up in this home and my memories were stored up in that attic too. Did I really want to delve into that? Though my head said run, I could not let mom down. She was depending on me. That had not always been the case, so I needed to not let her down.
Walking through the attic trying to decide where I want to start, an ornate jewelry box catches my eye. I perch on a box as I open the beautiful piece wondering what treasures could be inside. The first item that catches my attention is what appears to be an antique Engagement Ring. Whose ring was this? Taking it over to mom I ask her. With tears in her eyes she wants to know if she ever told me about her first love.
As she finished telling me her story I realized that there was more to my mom than I previously had known. How many other secrets might there be? Possibly more than a sore back would be realized from this venture. Starting on the next box took me to other memories.
When I went off to college I had left things behind because I was concerned that my new city friends would laugh at my country things. Such was the case of my treasures box. I had placed things that were important to me in this box. So what was in there after all these years? Opening it up and I see my rhodium Earrings. They were given to me when I graduated and were just as pretty now as they had been then. I gingerly placed them in my shirt pocket and went on to the next box.
Winter was written all over the next box I grabbed. Opening it up I found girls sweatshirts that my sister and I had outgrown years ago. Mom must have placed them up here one year and then left them when she realized we would have outgrown them by the following winter. They could be donated to the thrift shop.
Mom and I traveled over a lot of memory ground that day. We did not get as much done as we had hoped. However, the time spent going down memory lane was another set of riches for our treasure boxes for memories to hold.
