Can you put a 16 gauge piece of jewelry into a 18 gauge hole without using a taper first?
I am getting my ears pierced and am wondering, after my piercing heals will a just be able to force in a piece of 16 gauge jewelry or will I have to use a taper?
You can. but if you’re wanting to stretch your ears, why not go to a professional body piercer and get pierced at a larger gauge to begin with?
save yourself some steps. most piercers will pierce initially up to an 8 gauge If you’re worried about letting them shrink back down if you change your mind, don’t. the piercings I got done at a 10 gauge shrank back down to the “standard” 18 gauge with no issues. (of course I’ve since stretched them again but thats besides the point.)
if you’re wanting to stick with your original plan…
wait at least 6 months before you start stretching after getting the initial piercing (you should do this even if you do what I’ve suggested)
use a water based lubricant to help slide the jewelry in.
wait at least a month before stretching larger. stretched piercings are pretty much new piercings all over again and should be cleaned and taken care of as such.
stretching should never hurt, but it isn’t unusual to feel a slight burning sensation. if you start to feel sharp pain, stop what you’re doing and put in the original jewelry (whatever you were wearing before you started to try to stretch)
