The vintage antique cash register has become something to be desired among many collectors across the United Stated and Great Britain. These antique registers have become a token of the modern culture among the nations.
The register was initially invented in about 1879 by James Ritty a saloon owner from Dayton, Ohio. He soon sold off the patents to the National Manufacturing Company who sold out to John Patterson who renamed the company the nation Cash Register company in 1884.
The original register was used as a sales register. It was created to help prevent fraud among the workers in the stores. It kept the money safe unless a transaction was made in which the till drawer opened up. Most store owners did not feel like they needed these registers and didn’t want to spend their money on them. The register soon became more of a show item rather than a useful invention. People would come into the stores just to see the new machine.
The antique registers were very ornate and fancy. They were primarily made of brass but some were made out of wood, cast iron, or nickel. They were ornately designed and engraved upon. They also normally had bells attached to the register as well.
In 1917 with the onslaught of the world war materials were low for manufacturing. All of the metal was being used for the war so the classic brass register was replaced with some cheaper materials. This is one reason why the original antique cash registers are such in high demand among collectors. Some collect them for the intricate designs on the brass and wood while others collect them to preserve some heritage in the American and British history.
Some collectors choose to restore their antique registers if they can find the parts. Finding the parts can be a difficult task so many choose to keep the register in its original form as it is. Either way when you see one of these antique cash register it really is looking back to the 19th century to see modern technology taking place.
Antique cash registers have become one of the tokens of a great history. Invented in the United States but taken abroad in Great Britain these machines hold a rich history. It helped build the financial industry into the powerhouse that it is today. Now you may not see a lot of these antique registers around but you will see a cash register in almost every store that you enter.

Decent *small* tabletop CNC micro milling machine?
I am interested in a setup that can make small parts out of most materials – up to and including brass or aluminum. Smaller is better – none of the projects that I can think of are wider than 1″-2″ or longer than 4″. For example, I might want to engrave letters onto square 1/4″ rodstock. Or make jewelry. Or … I don’t know. Make little stuff. It would be a great hobby but space is real limited!
Try to mount a common drimmel drill to a piece of plywood with the drill bit sticking out.
Make a right angle with two pieces of plywood are screwed together in an “L” shape. Mount the drimmel drill to the inside of the “L”. You could use hanger iron ie. http://images.orgill.com/200×200/6787733.jpg to secure the drimmel drill to the inside of the plywood “L”. You need to drill a hole where the bit of the drimmel drill can stick out enough. Then mount the “L” to a table or whatever using screws.
